PREEMPTIVE_OS_PIPEOPS Wait type

The PREEMPTIVE_OS_PIPEOPS wait type is typically caused by waiting on some type of a call to the operating system. Usually I have seen that this relates to the things like xp_cmdshell or other operating system calls.

This doesn’t usually indicate too much of an issue other than SQL Server is waiting on an operating system thread.

The big question would be why is it waiting so much.

One example is if you are shelling out to the command prompt then using something to call back into SQL Server for things like backup or CheckDB that can cause lots of these waits.
