Azure Database Overview

Overview

When the server selected in the tree is an Azure SQL Database connection, Database Health Monitor shows the Azure Database Overview instead of the Server Overview.

In this version the page is a placeholder. It shows:

  • the title Azure Database Overview: <server name>, using the name the server has in the tree,
  • one empty panel.

Nothing is queried to build it, and nothing is refreshed while it is open.

Where to find it

Route How
Server tree Click an Azure SQL Database server under Server Health

A connection counts as Azure SQL Database when the connect dialog found the edition to be SQL Azure when it was added (from the Connect dialog or Connect to Multiple Servers). The database named in the connect dialog is saved with the connection and marked as Azure. A server added any other way opens the Server Overview.

On the tabs, the back history and the right-hand help rail, the page is named Server Overview. The page is built again on every visit rather than restored from the last one.

How it differs from the Server Overview

Server Overview Azure Database Overview
Title Server Overview: <server name> Azure Database Overview: <server name>
Panels Instance band, report navigator, historic waits, CPU schedulers, memory, blocking, active queries, storage latency, CPU and waits, backup exposure and the rest One empty panel
Live refresh Each panel refreshes on its own Nothing to refresh
Permission check Says so once when the login lacks VIEW SERVER STATE None
Not licensed or disconnected servers Shows the licensing message, or reconnects a disconnected server Not checked
Arranging panels Right-click a panel to move or hide it Nothing to arrange

The server’s tree node is different too. An Azure SQL Database server has no child nodes: no databases, no Real Time folder and no historic reports under it, and its connection is not opened in the background when the tree loads. Its right-click menu has only:

Item What it does
Refresh <server name> Reloads the server tree.
Remove <server name> from list Removes the connection.
Edit Connection for <server name> Opens the connection for editing.
Alias and Server Type for <server name> Sets an alias and the server type for the connection.

There is no Instance Level Reports menu for it.

The DBHealthHistory upgrade that runs against every connected server, from the right-click menu on the Server Health node, skips Azure SQL Database connections.

Requirements

  • An Azure SQL Database connection, added with the edition found as SQL Azure.
  • No permissions: the page runs no queries.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the page empty? The Azure Database Overview has no panels in this version. The Server Overview panels are not built for an Azure SQL Database connection, so the page shows its title and one empty panel.

Why are there no databases under my Azure server? The tree does not load child nodes for an Azure SQL Database connection.

Why does the tab say Server Overview? The tabs, the back history and the help rail name this page the same way as the Server Overview.
